How to Use This Calculator

Enter your slab length and width in feet. Then choose your grid spacing. Standard residential concrete uses 12 inches on center for patios and walkways. Driveways and heavier-duty slabs often use 8 or 10 inches. Select your bar size based on the load the slab will carry.

How Rebar Is Calculated

Long runs (parallel to length): Number of rows = floor(Width / Spacing) + 1. Each row runs the full length of the slab.

Cross runs (parallel to width): Number of columns = floor(Length / Spacing) + 1. Each column runs the full width.

Example: 12 x 16 ft slab, 12-inch spacing.

Do I need rebar in a residential concrete slab?

For most patios and walkways, rebar is recommended but sometimes skipped on thin 3-inch slabs under low loads. For driveways, garage floors, and any slab where vehicles or heavy equipment will sit, rebar is essential. It prevents the slab from cracking and separating when the soil underneath shifts. Wire mesh is a lighter alternative for thin decorative slabs, but it does not provide the same structural strength as rebar.

What bar size should I use for a residential driveway?

#4 bar (1/2 inch diameter) at 12-inch grid spacing on a 6-inch slab is the standard residential driveway specification. If you expect heavy truck traffic, upgrade to #5 bar at 8 or 10 inches. The cost difference is modest and the structural benefit is significant.

How do I calculate rebar for a circular slab?

Circular slabs are more complex because the runs vary in length. The simplest approach is to calculate a bounding square (diameter x diameter), apply the grid calculation, then reduce by 21 percent to account for the corners outside the circle. This calculator handles rectangular shapes only.

What is rebar spacing on center?

On center means the distance is measured from the middle of one bar to the middle of the next, not from edge to edge. A 12-inch on-center grid means bars are placed with 12 inches between their centerlines. This is the standard way grid spacing is specified in construction drawings.
