How to Use This Calculator
Pick your commission structure from the dropdown. Flat percentage is the simplest: one rate applied to the full deal value. Tiered quota uses different rates depending on where your deal lands relative to your quota target. Base plus bonus adds a fixed salary on top of a performance percentage.
Enter your deal or revenue value, then fill in the rate fields for your plan. The calculator shows gross commission, your effective blended rate, total compensation including any base, and an annualized projection based on hitting this deal value once per quarter.
How Sales Commission Is Calculated
Flat rate: Commission = Deal value x Rate
A $100,000 deal at 8% commission = $8,000.
Tiered quota: Each tier applies to the portion of revenue that falls within that band.
Example: $100,000 quota. Tiers: 5% on 0 to $50k, 8% on $50k to $100k, 12% on anything above $100k. If you close $140,000:
- Tier 1: $50,000 x 5% = $2,500
- Tier 2: $50,000 x 8% = $4,000
- Tier 3: $40,000 x 12% = $4,800
- Total commission: $11,300. Effective rate: 8.07%.
Base plus bonus: Total comp = Base salary + (Deal value x Bonus rate).
Commission Calculation Examples
- Enterprise SaaS deal, flat 6%, $250k contract: Commission = $15,000. Clean and simple.
- Quota at $120k, rep closes $90k, tiered plan: At 75% of quota, the rep earns Tier 1 and part of Tier 2 commission only. This is why many reps push to close deals before month end.
- Base $55k + 10% bonus, $80k in deals closed: Total comp = $55,000 + $8,000 = $63,000 for the period.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a typical commission rate for SaaS sales?
Industry surveys place most SaaS commission rates between 5% and 12% of annual contract value for individual contributors. Enterprise roles frequently land in the 8% to 10% range. Transactional volume roles may pay lower rates but on higher frequency. Rates above 15% are uncommon outside very high-touch, long-cycle deals.
What does on-target earnings (OTE) mean?
OTE is your total expected compensation when you hit 100% of your quota. It includes base salary plus the commission you earn at the 100% attainment level. If your base is $60k and your target commission at quota is $40k, your OTE is $100k. This calculator can help you check whether your OTE projection is realistic for your quota and rate combination.
How does quota attainment affect commission?
With a tiered plan, hitting only 80% of quota means your revenue stays in the lower tiers, earning lower rates. Finishing above 100% pushes you into the highest rate tier. This is intentional design. Accelerator tiers reward overperformance and motivate reps to keep selling after quota is met.
