Effective hourly rate
How to Use This Calculator
Choose how your pay is currently expressed. If you know your hourly rate, select that. If you have a job offer quoted as an annual salary, pick annual.
Enter the amount. Then set how many hours per week you work and how many weeks per year. Most full-time employment uses 40 hours and 52 weeks, but part-time and contract work can vary significantly. The calculator outputs all pay periods simultaneously so you can see the full picture at once.
How the Conversion Works
Every pay period is derived from the annual salary figure, which is the universal reference point.
Annual salary = Hourly rate x Hours per week x Weeks per year
From the annual figure, every other period is simple division.
- Monthly: Annual / 12
- Bi-weekly: Annual / 26
- Weekly: Annual / 52
- Daily: Annual / (Weeks x Days per week)
- Hourly: Annual / (Hours per week x Weeks per year)
A common question is why bi-weekly and monthly do not match up perfectly. Two paychecks per month gives you 24 paychecks per year, but a bi-weekly schedule gives you 26. In two months of the year you receive three paychecks instead of two. That 27th paycheck is often called the bonus paycheck and it is worth planning for when budgeting.
Common Conversion Examples
- Minimum wage at $7.25/hr (federal): Working 40 hours per week all year equals $15,080 annually or around $1,257 per month.
- $25/hr contractor: At 35 hours per week and 48 working weeks per year, the annual equivalent is $42,000, which is $3,500 per month.
- $75,000 annual salary: Divided by 2,080 working hours (40 hours x 52 weeks), this equals roughly $36.06 per hour. Useful for comparing salary offers to consulting day rates.
- Entry-level tech offer at $85,000: Monthly gross is $7,083. Bi-weekly paycheck is $3,269. Hourly equivalent is $40.87 per hour.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a simple rule for converting hourly to annual salary?
Yes. For a standard 40-hour week with 52 weeks, just double your hourly rate and add three zeros. So $20 per hour becomes roughly $20 x 2 x 1000 = $40,000. This is an approximation but it is close enough for quick mental math during job interviews.
Should I compare job offers on an hourly or annual basis?
Annual salary is the safer comparison point because it accounts for differences in expected hours. A salaried job might be pitched as $70,000 per year but expect 55 hours of work per week. That works out to about $24.48 per hour, potentially less than an hourly position paying $26.
What does gross pay mean versus take-home pay?
Gross pay is your earnings before any deductions. Take-home pay, also called net pay, is what lands in your bank account after federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and any voluntary deductions like health insurance or retirement contributions are removed. This calculator shows gross pay only. Actual take-home varies significantly based on your location and deductions.
How many work hours are in a year?
A standard full-time year is 2,080 hours, calculated as 40 hours per week times 52 weeks. This does not account for holidays or paid time off. When those are deducted, the effective working hours drop to around 1,960 to 2,000 for most Americans.
