How to Calculate SaaS Customer Lifetime Value

Customer Lifetime Value measures the overall gross revenue or net profit a single account generates before cancelling their subscription. SaaS executives use LTV alongside Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) to determine how much capital can be deployed into sales and marketing while maintaining profitable unit economics.

Calculating your LTV requires three core metrics:

The SaaS LTV Formulas

Gross Lifetime Value is determined by dividing ARPU by your monthly churn rate:

Gross LTV = ARPU / Monthly Churn Rate

For example, if your ARPU is $100 and your monthly churn rate is 2.5% (0.025), average customer lifespan is 40 months (1 / 0.025). Gross LTV equals $100 / 0.025 = $4,000.00.

Margin-Adjusted Net LTV Formula

To accurately measure gross profit contribution rather than top-line revenue, factor in your SaaS gross margin:

Net LTV = (ARPU x Gross Margin %) / Monthly Churn Rate

If your gross margin is 80%, Net LTV is $4,000 x 0.80 = $3,200.00. This figure represents the true margin cap for target CAC benchmarks.

LTV Benchmarks Across Monthly ARPU and Churn Tiers

The reference matrix below illustrates how churn rates impact overall customer lifetime value at an 80% gross margin.

Monthly ARPU Monthly Churn Customer Lifespan Gross LTV Net LTV (80% Margin)
$25.00 5.0% 20 months $500.00 $400.00
$100.00 2.5% 40 months $4,000.00 $3,200.00
$250.00 1.5% 66.7 months $16,666.67 $13,333.33
$1,000.00 1.0% 100 months $100,000.00 $80,000.00

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy LTV to CAC ratio for SaaS?

A benchmark LTV to CAC ratio for growing software companies is 3:1 or higher. A ratio of 3:1 indicates that a customer generates three times more lifetime value than the cost required to acquire them, leaving sufficient margin for overhead, research, and expansion.

How does annual churn differ from monthly churn in LTV?

If you track annual churn instead of monthly churn, divide annual churn by 12 to approximate your monthly churn rate before running monthly LTV calculations. Alternatively, divide annual ARPU by annual churn to compute multi-year account value.

Why is gross margin critical when analyzing LTV?

Top-line revenue LTV ignores server hosting, third-party API dependencies, and customer success expenses. Margin-adjusted LTV ensures you do not overspend on customer acquisition relative to your true gross profit output.
