How to Calculate Stripe Transaction Fees

Processing transactions online involves fee structures designed to offset compliance, fraud risk, and network expenses. With standard Stripe US processing, the formula consists of a percentage rate plus a flat fee per charge.

Using this calculator is simple: enter the dollar value of your invoice or sales receipt and select your typical transaction category. Our tool instantly determines the precise cut Stripe takes, your actual payout, and also works backward to specify the gross billing amount needed to clear your target net earnings.

The Stripe Fee Equations

To calculate what you will receive (Standard payout math):

Net Payout = Charge Amount - (Charge Amount × Rate Percentage) - Fixed Fee

For example, at 2.9% + $0.30 on a $100.00 transaction, the fee is: ($100.00 × 0.029) + $0.30 = $3.20. Your net payout is $96.80.

To calculate what you must invoice (Reverse charge math):

Gross Invoice = (Net Target + Fixed Fee) / (1 - Rate Percentage)

For example, if you want to clear exactly $100.00 after a 2.9% + $0.30 fee: ($100.00 + $0.30) / (1 - 0.029) = $103.30 / 0.971 = $106.39. You must charge $106.39.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I avoid paying Stripe transaction fees?

While you cannot force Stripe to discount transaction charges on standard credit cards, merchants frequently adjust agreements or utilize custom item pricing to request that customers contribute equivalent Processing Fee overhead. Alternatively, selecting ACH Direct Debit transactions reduces processing rate charges to 0.8% per transaction, capped at a maximum of $5.00.

Are Stripe fees refunded when I issue client refunds?

No. Effective in recent fee policy terms, Stripe does not return credit card processing interchange fees when a payments merchant issues a refund. You retain responsibility for the original percentage and flat processing expenses, meaning the cost of returns is borne entirely by the merchant.

Does Stripe charge a regular monthly recurring fee?

No. Stripe utilizes a pay-as-you-go financial format and does not demand set monthly minimums, subscription fees, or initial setup charges. You are solely billed for transactions processed through your Stripe account.

What determines an international card processing charge?

Stripe applies a 1% additional fee on credit cards issued outside of the United States. Furthermore, if currency conversion is required, a standard 1% fee is applied to the transaction total.
