Why Morse Code Was Invented
In 1825, Samuel Morse received a letter informing him that his wife was ill. By the time he traveled home, she had already died and been buried. Distracted by how slowly information traveled, Morse dedicated himself to creating a rapid long-distance electrical communication system.
While electric telegraph wires could transmit electrical pulses, scientists lacked a simple standardized code to turn electrical clicks into human readable text. Morse and Vail solved this by mapping letters of the English alphabet to distinct combinations of short pulses (dots or dits) and long pulses (dashes or dahs).
How Morse Code Timing Works
The timing of Morse code is built around the duration of a single dot:
- Dot Length: 1 unit of time.
- Dash Length: 3 units of time (3 times longer than a dot).
- Intra-character Gap: 1 unit of silence between dots and dashes within the same letter.
