The Modern Tipping Guide for 2026: Restaurants, Haircuts, Uber, and Delivery
Tipping norms have shifted significantly in the past five years. Pre-set tip prompts on touchscreen payment terminals now appear everywhere from coffee counters to hardware stores, and the suggested percentages have crept upward. Understanding what is genuinely expected versus what is a screen designed to generate guilt is increasingly useful.
Restaurant Dining
The baseline in most North American restaurants remains 18 to 20 percent of the pre-tax subtotal for average to good service. Twenty percent has effectively become the standard "satisfactory" tier, not the generous tier it was a decade ago.
25 percent signals excellent service or a particularly smooth interaction with the staff. Below 15 percent communicates active dissatisfaction. Not tipping at all in a traditional sit-down restaurant where servers are paid below standard minimum wage in expectation of tips is generally considered a strong social statement rather than a neutral choice.
Coffee Shops and Counter Service
This is where the prompt fatigue argument is most legitimate. When you order a drink at a counter, there is no table service, no pre-bussing, no check delivery. Whether to tip is a genuine personal call. One to two dollars for a complex drink order is a reasonable threshold if you want to acknowledge the craft involved. Tapping "no tip" on a simple drip coffee is acceptable.
Hair Salons and Barbershops
15 to 20 percent is the standard range. If the same person owns the salon and performs the service, some etiquette guides say tipping is optional because the owner sets their own prices. In practice, most salon owners appreciate tips just as much as employees do and the 15 to 20 percent norm still applies.
Food Delivery
Delivery drivers often earn the majority of their income through tips rather than base rates from platforms. The widespread recommended minimum is $3 to $5 for short local deliveries and 10 to 15 percent for larger orders or long distances. Tips given through the app platform are generally passed to drivers, though each platform has different policies worth checking.
Ride-Share (Uber and Lyft)
15 to 20 percent is the standard recommendation for clean vehicles, competent navigation, and professional conduct. Tipping is optional on these platforms from a policy standpoint but drivers rate passengers too, and passengers with consistent tip histories tend to receive better service and pickup response times in markets where the rating system is active.
Hotel Staff
- Housekeeping: $2 to $5 per day, left daily rather than at check-out, as the person cleaning may vary each day
- Bellhop / Porter: $1 to $2 per bag carried
- Concierge: $5 to $20 for significant assistance with reservations or special arrangements; nothing required for a quick question
- Valet: $2 to $5 when retrieving your car
When You Are Splitting the Bill
The tipping calculation gets complicated in groups because people disagree about whether to tip on the pre- or post-tax total, and whether to split exactly or round generously. Using a calculator removes the arithmetic from the table and lets the group focus on the conversation instead.
