How to Read D4 Dice and Calculate Modifiers

In tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons (D&D 5e), the four-sided die (d4) is frequently used for light weapon damage (like daggers and darts) and healing spells like Cure Wounds or Healing Word.

Because a tetrahedron (pyramid) die does not land flat with a face pointing directly upward, beginners often wonder how to read the result. This guide explains how to read both top-read and bottom-read d4 dice using our Dice Roller.

2 Types of Physical D4 Dice

1. Top-Read D4 Dice (Most Common Modern Design)

On top-read dice, three numbers appear on each triangular face. When the die settles on the table, look at the top apex point of the pyramid. The number printed upright at the top point on all visible faces is your roll result.

2. Bottom-Read D4 Dice (Older Classic Design)

On bottom-read dice, numbers are printed along the bottom edge of each face. When the die lands, read the number printed along the bottom base edge touching the table surface.

Top-Read Die:    Read the upright number at the TOP vertex.
Bottom-Read Die: Read the number printed along the BASE edge.

Adding Ability Modifiers ($d4 + X$)

In D&D 5e, attack and spell damage rolls require adding an ability modifier (such as Strength, Dexterity, or Spellcasting modifier) to the die roll result.

$$\text{Total Result} = \text{d4 Die Roll} + \text{Ability Modifier}$$

Worked Example: Dagger Attack

A Rogue with a +3 Dexterity modifier hits a goblin with a dagger ($1d4 + 3$):

1. Roll the d4 die: The top vertex shows 2.
2. Add Modifier: $2 + 3 = \mathbf{5 \text{ Piercing Damage}}$.
