Step 1: Calculate Net Bathroom Floor Area

Measure the length and width of your bathroom floor in feet. For rectangular bathrooms, multiply length by width to find total square footage.

If your bathroom measures 8 feet long by 6 feet wide, your net floor area is 48 square feet.

If your bathroom has an L-shaped layout around a vanity or shower enclosure, divide the room into two smaller rectangles, calculate each area separately, and add them together.

Step 2: Calculate Individual Tile Square Footage

Calculate the coverage area of a single tile in square feet by multiplying its length by width in inches and dividing by 144:

  Single Tile Area (sq ft) = (Tile Length in inches x Tile Width in inches) / 144

Here are common tile coverage ratings per individual piece:

6 x 6 inch tile: 36 / 144 = 0.25 sq ft per tile
12 x 12 inch tile: 144 / 144 = 1.00 sq ft per tile
12 x 24 inch tile: 288 / 144 = 2.00 sq ft per tile

Step 3: Calculate Raw Tiles Needed

Divide total floor area by individual tile coverage area:

48 sq ft bathroom floor / 1.00 sq ft (12x12 tile) = 48 raw tiles.

Step 4: Add Cutting Waste Allowance (Crucial Step)

You cannot install 48 raw tiles without cutting pieces to fit against walls, toilet flanges, and doorway thresholds. Cutting tile leaves unused remnants.

Standard tile installation rules require adding 10 percent waste for straight grid layouts and 15 percent waste for diagonal herringbone patterns:

48 raw tiles x 1.10 (10% waste) = 52.8 tiles $\rightarrow$ 53 total tiles needed.

Step 5: Convert Tiles to Box Counts

Tiles are sold packaged in full boxes. Check the box label for total tile count per carton. If a box contains 10 tiles, divide total tiles by 10 and round up to the nearest whole box:
