Elapsed time sounds like the easiest calculation in the world. You look at the start time, you look at the end time, you find the difference. Done.
Except it keeps tripping people up in ways that feel embarrassing but are actually quite understandable. Mental arithmetic with time is surprisingly awkward because time does not operate in base 10 like most numbers. Minutes max at 60. Hours max at 24. The rules keep shifting.

Why Time Subtraction Feels Awkward
Imagine a task that started at 9:47 and finished at 11:23. How long did it take?
Most people try to subtract 9:47 from 11:23 the way they would subtract regular numbers.
23 minus 47 does not work because 23 is smaller than 47. So you need to borrow 60 minutes from the hours column. That gives you 83 minus 47 = 36 minutes. Then the hours column: 11 minus 1 (borrowed) minus 9 = 1 hour. Total: 1 hour 36 minutes.

The Scenarios Where People Make Mistakes
Crossing the hour boundary is the most common source of errors. When your start time ends in a large number of minutes and your end time ends in a small one (like 9:47 to 10:15) people often calculate 10 minus 9 = 1 hour and incorrectly add the minutes directly, getting 1 hour 15 minus 47 minutes wrong.
Overnight spans are even more persistent. If a process started at 23:30 and finished at 01:45 the following morning, the arithmetic becomes 01:45 plus 24:00 minus 23:30 = 02:15. Very few people work that out correctly in their head on the first try.
Cross-day tracking often also fails in spreadsheets when time fields are formatted as text rather than as time values. A cell showing 08:30 might look like a time but if stored as text the subtraction formula will fail silently or return an error.
Practical Uses for Elapsed Time Calculations
Project tracking is one of the most common uses. Knowing exactly how long a task took versus how long it was estimated to take improves future planning significantly. Developers lawyers consultants and designers who bill by the hour need accurate time tracking for invoicing.
