A minus sign in front of a mixed number applies to the whole quantity, not just the whole part. Negative two and one half means negative 2.5. It does not mean negative 2 plus 0.5. A Sanity Check Worth Two Seconds

Before you trust a conversion, glance at the whole number. Three and three quarters has to land somewhere between 3 and 4. If your answer reads 15.4 or 0.375, a step went wrong. This one habit catches most errors before they reach your homework or your invoice.
