How to Make Your Text Bold or Italic on Instagram and TikTok Bios
Instagram does not have a bold button. Neither does TikTok. But plenty of accounts you follow have bold text, italic text, or stylized fonts in their bios right now. How are they doing it?
The answer is Unicode. Every character you see on your screen has a code point in the Unicode standard, and Unicode includes complete alternative alphabets that look bold, italic, script, and monospace. These are not fonts applied on top of standard letters. They are genuinely different characters that display consistently across every device and platform.
Why This Works Everywhere
When you type a regular "A" you are entering the character at Unicode position U+0041. A bold mathematical "A" lives at U+1D400. They look different but they are both just characters. Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, and most other platforms accept text input, and that includes these alternative Unicode characters. None of them are blocked because they are not tricks or exploits. They are legitimate characters the Unicode Consortium officially standardized.

Best Styles for Each Platform
Instagram bio: Bold and script styles tend to work best. They are readable at small sizes and give a premium feel without looking like you are trying too hard. Avoid styles with heavy diacritics or strikethrough. Those read as messy on mobile screens.
TikTok username: Short usernames work well in monospace or double-struck styles. The squatter character width of monospace makes short names feel more substantial.

For bios and usernames these trade-offs are usually acceptable. For main post content, standard text is always the safer accessibility-conscious choice.
