How BMR Is Calculated

Why BMR Decreases with Age

The primary driver is muscle loss. Skeletal muscle is metabolically expensive tissue. It burns significantly more calories at rest than fat does. Starting in your late 20s, most people naturally lose 3 to 5 percent of muscle mass per decade in a process called sarcopenia. Less muscle means a lower resting metabolic rate.

A 50-year-old and a 25-year-old of identical height and weight can have meaningfully different BMRs if their body compositions differ significantly. Age itself causes some metabolic changes at the cellular level, but the primary explanation is the muscle mass shift.

What Else Affects BMR

Body composition: Two people with the same total weight but different muscle-to-fat ratios will have different BMRs. The person carrying more muscle burns more at rest.

Thyroid function: The thyroid produces hormones that directly regulate metabolic rate. Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can reduce BMR meaningfully. If you are eating accurately and gaining weight despite a calculated appropriate intake, thyroid function is worth discussing with a doctor.

Temperature: Your body burns extra energy in cold environments to maintain core temperature. This is a minor effect for most people in heated indoor environments but becomes relevant for outdoor workers or cold-climate athletes.

Fever: Body temperature increases of 1 degree Celsius raise BMR by roughly 10 to 13 percent. This is why illness causes noticeable weight changes even without eating differently.

The Most Effective Way to Counteract BMR Decline

Resistance training. It builds and preserves skeletal muscle, which is the main lever for keeping BMR elevated as you age. Three to four sessions of progressive weight training per week is sufficient for most people to maintain muscle mass through their 40s and 50s and, with adequate protein intake, even into their 60s.

This is why "metabolism" is not primarily something that happens to you. It is something you actively maintain through how you train and eat.
